The Sarina Sugar Shed is an authentic miniature sugar processing plant with machinery that has been sourced from around the world. The miniature sugar processing mill and distillery is the only one of its kind in Australia. For over 100 years the processing of sugar cane has remained mainly unchanged, from the harvesting, extraction and evaporation process and to the storage. The shed allows visitors to see the whole process taking the raw sugar canes and transforming them into the many colors and types of granules you find at the supermarket today.
To help explain and demonstrate the processes of sugar cane to sugar the Sugar Shed uses the miniature processing mill and multi media presentations. There are four tours daily, check the website, www.sarinasugarshed.com.au for times of the tours and entry prices for the Sugar Shed. There is the Just Sweet Cafe with refreshments and snacks. The Shed has picnic areas and is wheelchair friendly. The Sarina Sugar Shed produces a range of Gourmet Sauces available for purchase from the shed. The most amazing liqueurs are also distilled on the premises and are available for purchase; choose from some very interesting liqueurs. Sarina Mango Rum Liqueur is a blend of Sarina Spirit which has been soaked in the local Bowen mangoes and flavored with rum, coffee and chocolate. The Sarina Rum Liqueur is the most popular liqueur produced at the Sugar Shed and is a blend of Sarina Spirit, chocolate and coffee flavors. Sarina Coconut Rum Liqueur is a light bodied coconut rum, distilled from sugarcane and blended with coconut, a wonderful drink for making cocktails and with mixers. There are also Vodka are Schnapps to try all produce at the Sugar Shed and very high quality liqueurs. Another very popular drink made on site is the ginger beer, this is a non alcoholic drink brewed from an old family recipe and very refreshing on a hot tropical day.

Nebo is a small town located in North Queensland. Nebo is a beautiful and diverse region, with prime grazing land and crops, significant coal deposits and a rich history of gold. Around 90 kilometers from Mackay, it is only a short drive to the town of Nebo. The Nebo Museum gives visitors to the area a chance to view relics from the gold rush days. The Museum was started by local people during the Shire’s Centenary in 1983. First located in the old Nebo Police Station the museum was later relocated to its own building and stands as a tribute to the pioneers of the gold mining past. Nebo was the closest rural and gold mining town to Mackay and is an important town in remembering the harsh history in Northern Queensland. The Museum in Nebo is run by volunteers from the community, and is open for viewing from 9am to 3pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays or by appointment, which can be arranged with the regional council located in the building next door. The Nebo Museum has on show a collection of paintings, the Mount Britton Collection of paintings displaying the story of the early pioneers to the region.
Just outside of Nebo you will find the Pioneer Tracks of Queensland Gallery. The Gallery is housed in the Marley Accommodation Center on the Nebo Highway, and is showing a photographic display of the early years of the settlement of the state of Queensland. I love visiting Mackay. My partner has relatives there. It is a really big climate change from where we live in Tasmania. You really can feel the difference. And it’s so sunny, when its not raining! You can swim in pools all year round. There are stingers in the water at times and it’s not safe to swim at the beach when there are stingers; so most of the locals have pools or go to the pool. So lazily sitting in the pool on the noodle chair with my alcohpop is one of my favorite things to do when it’s hot, which is a lot. I love the different foods too. All the exotic fruits and even the flowers are different. It is such a contrast to our place so tropically beautiful. Mangoes are the go, more and more mangoes for me please and so cheap while we’re up at Christmas. There are local banana plantations and the bananas are just beautiful. What can I say; you’ve got to love tropical fruits especially when they are fresh from the farm. We take day trips out of Mackay to tour the countryside and check out any farm gate stalls.
Very soothing driving along just looking at what the country side has to offer. We rent our cars from carhiremackayairport.com.au. We always get one that’s a bit bigger than we need so that we are all comfortable and we can take the nephew out with us. With carhiremackayairport.com.au most of the cars from the companies on offer have unlimited kilometers, so we can take out time strolling around the farms and the beautiful beaches. carhiremackayairport.com.au is also able to give you a price guarantee. As a part of the vroomvroomvroom group of companies, car rental companies offer us their best deals through carhiremackayairport.com.au. Companies like Avis, Thrifty, Budget and Hertz giving us more choice in companies and vehicles. Book online with carhiremackayairport.com.au and then pick up your car from the hire car desk at the airport of your rental company. It’s really a very simple procedure. We also add a child safety seat on the booking page while checking that it’s the car we want. Prices are quoted and then carhiremackayairport.com.au will guarantee your quote. Simple stuff really, more to choose from means more competition, which means less to pay for me, and more mangoes to eat on our holiday.

Mackay is a gateway into the tropics of Queensland where you can start a real tropical holiday and tour all the fantastic places along the Queensland coast. The best way to tour is by car and you can rent many kinds of vehicles from the car hire Mackay airport agents. They have a wide range of small to large cars, mini vans, four wheel drives and other vehicle for you to choose from. Make the best choice for you preferred travel plans which is easily done after you have a good idea of your itinerary.
If you are choosing to stay in the heart of town and use the boating facilities to see the islands then you might only need a small car to get you around town unless you have a big group of people. A four wheel drive might be too much if you are only going to drive on the highways and around the sealed road that lead to the main attractions. But an off road vehicle is essential if you are planning to use it for its intended purposes.
The city itself has a nice marina where you can sit and watch the waterfront while you sip on a coffee or cooling beer. There are now a good selection of fine dining and elegant restaurants to choose from since the tourism trade has been well established around Mackay city. Mackay to most people is a town that is out of the way and therefore not a real attraction as part of the Queensland tours. My line of thinking is that because Mackay is an out of the way town that it is one of the best places to visit hen you are traveling up and down the Queensland coast. Being isolated from the rest of the world for little periods at a time means that for just a small while there is little to worry about except what you are going to do to fill your days off. Personally I like to take a small boat for a sail around the bays and then drop in a few fishing lines to see what there is to catch. After a hard days fishing I go to the local bar and have a delicious counter meal and a few beers before I go for a long walk along the beach front.
Flying is the only way to travel for me so that there is no time wasted traveling the long dusty roads to and from your destination. After I leave the plane I search for the car hire MacKay airport reception desk and pick up the car I booked online before I left for my trip. There is always something to do in the small towns and usually there is something unique that no other place has to offer. Don’t be put off by the thought that a town that is not bombarded with tourist information is not going to be any fun because often this is not true at all.

After I finished university I was given a great job in the field that I had been studying which was food technologies and science. Because Mackay was one of the biggest exporters of sugar and sugar cane products I had to travel their once a month to sample the sugars which were being sent out around the world. Testing the quality of individual ingredients was my new job to make sure that the quality meet with Australian standards. It was a rewarding job that had many perks to it.
Not only did I get to fly all over Australia and to some of the islands I was also given accommodation plus a company credit card and a hire car so that I would not have to spend any of my own money. These perks were exactly what I was looking for when I decided to get into college to be ahead of the rest of the pack.

Never for one minute did I expect to wind up living in a little town like Mackay but now that I have been here for a while I see that it is just like any other beach town but it is just out of the way of the main cities. This was the appeal that interested me the most, the idea of getting out of the smog filled city and finding a comfortable out of the way place where I could see the ocean and do my paintings.
Mackay was the perfect spot to find with complete waterfront access with all the water activities that most beach towns have to offer. There is a tropical rain forest not far away which is a great place to take a nature hike or go looking for wildlife. After several years of this lifestyle I will never want to go back to the rampage of the big towns. Life is meant to be taken slowly and enjoyed to the utmost.

Staying in Mackay for your tropical holiday is a smart idea because you are not only staying in a small town where the prices of accommodation are still cheap but you are also near all of the attractions that make the Sunshine Coast so much fun. Just a short drive south until you get to Gympie there is rain forest and sugar cane fields all along the highway. This part of Queensland is a great place to get a real feel of what the county people of this area get to enjoy every day.
Further south down the main highway of the Queensland coast you will get to the heart of the Sunshine Coast which is where you will see the beach towns start to pop up on the map. For some great waves and fishing action stay over at one of the towns like Maroochydore or Mooloolaba which are very charming beach towns. Go to see the marine attraction Underwater World or one of the other attraction parks or zoo’s and reserves.
Mackay itself has some magical scenery spots to stop for lunch or an exploring walk but to get there you will need some form of transport.
