Mackay Tourism wants you to discover for yourself just how beautiful this region of Australia is. Come and visit the Pioneer Valley. The Pioneer Valley is west of Mackay and is a great favorite for self drive holidays in Queensland. You begin your journey at Marian at the Melba House Visitor Information Centre. Melba House is historical itself. Built in 1882 and 1883, the house was the residence for the manager of the first Marian Plantation Mill. It is called Melba house because the manager Charles Armstrong married Helen Proter Mitchell, also known as Nellie. Nellie went on to be Australia’s most famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. The house stands now in the Edward Lloyd Park as a memorial to Dame Nellie. You will find local arts and crafts and refreshments for sale in Melba House; it is open from 9am to 3pm daily, except of Christmas day and New Years day.

You then travel through the sugar cane fields to the Eungella National Park. The Eungella National Park is the longest stretch of ancient subtropical rainforest in Australia. You can find platypus in the creeks here in this ancient place. Take time to look at the Mirani Museum. The Mirani Museum is a look into the history and people of the Pioneer Valley.
