One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of renting a car is understanding how the insurance works. With some of the smaller companies you may be required to pass a certain driving check in order to qualify for insurance that you then have to purchase in order to rent a vehicle. Whereas many of the larger companies have a blanket insurance plan that covers most all of the drivers that would think about renting a vehicle from them.
Nevertheless, most companies, big and small alike, choose to offer several levels of coverage that each driver needs to think about before they choose one based solely on price. The first amount of coverage is basically like carrying the minimum liability on your own vehicle and will cover you for damages caused by someone else while you are driving the vehicle. On the other hand, the more advanced coverage generally insures you for damages to the vehicle that you may or may not have caused and is a good idea when you’re driving on unfamiliar roads.
Additionally, there are other insurances that are offered by most car rental companies and even some private companies to help ensure that you have a safe journey. Most of these additional coverage options have to do with roadside assistance and cover the vehicle for towing and repairs should it be necessary due to mechanical failure. Again, in unfamiliar areas, this is a great option to know that you are covered for pretty much anything that life could throw at you.
